Scuba Diving Certification Class - MAY 2019 - $360.00

The SIU Student Recreation Center is excited to offer an opportunity for you to become a certified scuba diver with the option of experiencing reef diving in the warm waters off the coast of south Florida in Ft. Lauderdale the week of May 18-24

Certified dive instructor, Dwight Tungett will provide the class room and underwater instruction. Dwight is a certified Open Water Instructor for both PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) and SDI (Scuba Diving International). Upon completion of the program held at the Rec Center, participants will have completed the online learning, classroom training, and contained water (in a swimming pool) diving. Final step toward certification requires divers to practice and demonstrate skills in an open water environment (pond, lake, ocean etc...)

Dates: Saturday, May 4 & Sunday, May5

Time:  9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Location:  SIU Student Recreation Center, Pool

Cost of Scuba Certification:

  • Students: $350
  • Members: $355
  • Non-members: $360

Price includes:

  • access to an online learning component that is to be completed prior to start of class on May 3
  • all scuba gear including mask, fins, Buoyancy Control Device, air tank, and wetsuit
  • 16 hours of instruction at the SIU Student Recreation Center on May 4 & 5, 2019
  • Certificate upon completion of entire course including the open water dive portion. Open water portion done either over spring break in Ft. Lauderdale, FL or in June at a quarry dive site near Carbondale.
  • Note, scuba diving certification does not expire once achieved!

Three phases of Scuba Certification program:

  1. Online knowledge – link will be sent upon registration for class (deadline to register is April 17, 2019) and must be completed by start of class on May 3.
  2. Knowledge review from online component and Contained Water Diving skills
  3. Open Water Diving skills
  4. Upon completion of the program held at the Rec Center, participants will have completed the online learning, classroom training, and contained water (in a swimming pool) diving.

    Final step toward certification requires divers to practice and demonstrate skills in an open water environment (pond, lake, ocean etc...)

    Open Water Diving skills – 2 OPTIONS

    1. Join SDI Instructor, Dwight Tungett in Ft. Lauderdale/Pompano Beach, FL week of May 18-24.(costs of transportation and lodging additional) If interested in this option, contact Sally Wright at (618)453-2511 or wright1@siu.edu
    2. Plan on a date to be set during class in May for sometime in June for a two day weekend trip to a local dive quarry and Dwight Tungett will be there to lead you through skills for certification.

    To participate in this program, you must be able to demonstrate these swim skills: (this will take place with instructor the evening of April 26 at the REC Center pool) SWIM SKILL - Must be able to swim (no time requirement) unassisted for 200 yards = 8 lengths of pool OR Must be able to swim with a mask, fins, and snorkel (no time requirement) unassisted for 300 yards = 12 lengths of pool SURVIVAL FLOAT - Must be able to sustain a survival float for 10 minutes.
